I have to confess that for a big part of last Tuesday’s fixture against the Nomads at Filton Ex-Services Club I was distracted from the actual game itself by conversation with Barnesy and trading insults with Compact…  but here is the gist of it!

Taffy & Wiggle got the Almonds off to a blinding start by scoring 17 & 21 respectively and putting us 6 pins in front, earning ourselves a well deserved “well played the pair” & smattering of applause.  Compact tried to psyche me out of my game, in the hopes of regaining his superiority over me in the averages no doubt, by staring at me whilst I played – enough to put anyone off.  What foolishness made him think he could gaze upon my person without my express permission I know not, & he was seriously over-estimating his power over women anyway (no change there then…), so I soon ruined his little game by holding my nerve & making him face the opposite way like the naughty little schoolboy he is and, after a shaky start when he did make me get 2 ducks, I redeemed myself by pulling 9 pins on my oppo.

aRCe & Compact were put on next in an attempt by the Craptain to shake up the running order, and they also earned a “wptp” by pulling a further 7 pins on the game to put us 13 up – mainly due to aRCe pulling the extra pins, I have to say, although I suppose Compact did his bit by drawing even with his own oppo.  I really, really wish I didn’t have to write this next bit…  but despite me doing my best to be supportive of Orical by encouraging him to wear a red shirt that would keep him in mind of the fact it is the front red pin he is indeed meant to be aiming at, he and Sparky put in an unelectrifying performance with 19 & 21, to lose us all our leading pins & one more for the pot.  And have you noticed how some people are never happy?  Having not only achieved double figures this week but also trebled or quadrupled his recent scores, Orical STILL moaned about his game being off…  it’s definitely not the fcuking shirt then!!

Lodge was The Chosen One this week, i.e.  paired with the Craptain – a dubious honour.  Apparently it was my fault that Lodge, who scored 20, broke his ‘no ducks’ run of luck for mentioning it in the MR for the past 2 weeks, and not the fact that it didn’t suit him to be singled out to partner the Craptain…  it suited the latter all right though, as he put in a Craptain’s innings and finished with a 33, pulling back a whopping 17 pins on his oppo and putting The Almonds back in the lead by 9 pins.

The excitement was palpable at this point:  we hadn’t been in the lead at this stage of the game for longer than any of us care to remember – luckily peRV managed to keep his own particular brand of excitement under control this week, and he was next on the alley with Charley Farley, whom he had brought along at the insistence of the competitive Almonds in the hopes of knocking him off the top of the averages!  What can I say?  The game was there for the taking, but they obviously got confused and couldn’t understand the concept of winning any longer – peRV finished with 24, CF 9, & now we were 16 behind with all our hopes pinned on Jocky & The Turk.

It was the closest finish in a while, but unfortunately this week's ‘ankers were unable to do more than just about hold their own…  Jocky had a Sweet 16, & Turk – who knows quite a lot of ‘language’ for one so young – had 21.  Adding a further 5 to the ‘dropped’ pot means that we lost this week’s game by only 21 – a definite improvement!!  There was much perusing of the averages and talk of Movers & Groovers, plus Craptain spouting some more rubbish about ‘upper echelons’ and the like…  one thing I know for certain sure, Compact is still beneath me.

It will be interesting to see how The Almonds fare when we do ‘free styling’ with the outrageous shirts next week! – our game will be on our home alley, Tuesday 31/1, against the Winterbourne Cricketers.
